Smoke at the lake can come from distant wildfires or from planned burns nearby. Check the numbers before you decide what kind of day it is.

EPA's current and forecast Air Quality Index. The scale has six bands: Good (0 to 50), Moderate (51 to 100), Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (101 to 150), Unhealthy (151 to 200), Very Unhealthy (201 to 300) and Hazardous (301 and higher).

Fire and Smoke Map
Run by EPA and the Forest Service. It maps fine particle pollution (PM2.5) from wildfires and other sources, which helps when the smoke is coming from somewhere else.

Planned burns nearby
The Forest Service plans a 40-acre understory burn in Baldwin Meadow, near Baldwin Beach and north of SR 89, starting sometime between Oct 1 and Oct 25, 2026, if approvals and conditions allow. The area may close for several days. The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team map shows planned and active burns around the basin.

South Lake Tahoe Recreation & Aquatics Center
The City's 64,000-square-foot center opened April 18, 2026. A day-use pass covers the gymnasium, pools, exercise room and walking track. The two-story climbing wall and indoor batting cages are drop-in extras on top of the day fee. Pools keep their own hours, listed on the City's aquatics page.

Tahoe Ice Arena
An indoor, year-round rink owned by the City and managed by Tahoe Sports Entertainment. It runs public skate sessions, learn-to-skate classes and hockey programs.
