Taylor Creek in fall

Each fall, kokanee salmon move up Taylor Creek to spawn. The Forest Service expects the run from mid to late October into November. Several nearby sites close in October, so the dates matter.

Taylor Creek
The creek begins at Fallen Leaf Lake Dam and flows into Lake Tahoe. The Forest Service expects kokanee spawning from mid to late October into November. It also names Meeks Creek, Third Creek, Trout Creek and the Upper Truckee River as spawning streams.

Taylor Creek Visitor Center
Run with the Great Basin Institute. Several self-guided trails start here, including the Rainbow Trail and the Stream Profile Chamber, and all facilities are accessible. The Forest Service lists no fee for the site today. The center closes for the season Oct 25.

A proposed fee, not a current one
In July the Forest Service proposed a $10 per vehicle day fee at the visitor center, rising to $15 in year 5. The comment period ended Sep 29. Nothing has been adopted as of our check.

The Pope and Baldwin estates, with a museum in the former Baldwin-McGonagle residence, historic cabins, gardens and trails. The Forest Service lists Oct 4 as its closing date for the season.

Pope and Baldwin beaches
Both close for the season Oct 12. Pope Beach does not allow pets. National forest land stays open year-round, but parking and services become limited after closures.

Baldwin Meadow burn
A planned 40-acre burn near Baldwin Beach could start any day between Oct 1 and Oct 25 and may close the area for several days.
